Could someone give me some info on false pregnancies?
My bitch went through one after her last season, but it was mild.
This time she is showing more signs of it. And just in the last day it seems shes gained weight. Is that common for a false pregnancy? If she were preggo, the litter would be due right around Thanksgiving, just to give you an idea.
Thanks!

You might have her checked for cysts
or some other under lying condidtion which is causing it
having a female have a flase preg from a breeding that didn't take is one thing but if it is reoccuring that would be a red flag to me of something else wrong

Really? I've always been told that if they have a false pregnancy once, they will normally have one after every heat cycle. But shes my first intact bitch, so this is all new to me.
The weird thing about it is that she just all the sudden gained weight. It seems like just today it happened. She has almost a pot bellied look, theres hardly a tuck up. Should I look into worming her???

Are her teats protruded and turned pink and does she look like the mammories are starting to swell...
as for worming ...that is a onset of signs no an all of a sudden type thing
if she doesn't show those signs of false preg how is she acting and is her belly tight and bloated could be a blockage if it is the later

If she is not acting right...again that would be severe red flags for me
but not being able to see her and how she is acting or any signs ..it makes it hard to be of more help
again false preg I would still have her checked out making an appointment But if she is bloated and not acting right and everything was all of a sudden i would get her to the vet pronto
Do you have her on Ivermectin aka heartguard

Yes she is showing signs of a false pregnancy. Mammories are swelling.
She hasnt been acting any different. She was kind of lazy today, but as was everyone else. ;-P
You think it could be a bowel blockage???

No she is not on any sort of heartguard medication.
Actually, now that you've mentioned it...a blockage is sounding about right. She was very gasy all day today...could that be a sign? What should I do to help that?

if it is a blockage that is dangerous and need to be tended to right away... does she like to chew on things
what are her gums like...if you press on them does the spot where you press go back to pink right away or does it take a second

She does like to chew on things, she had a bone earlier.
Her gums look fine. I will for sure keep an eye on her. She went outside just a bit ago and pee'd, and she actually did look less bloated. So hopefully she'll be fine in the morning. If not, we'll do what needs to be done.
thanks so much for your help so far! I appreciate it.

you know your dog...if she looks miserable and her gums pale and if it takes a second for the white spot to turn back to color then she isn't doing well Vet immediately
BUT if she is just getting rolly polly with a false pregnacy...Still contact the vet talk to them and determine what to do next...that is not an emergency but again there is something not right and hopefully it is something simple and correctable

I have a bitch that goes thru false pregnancy EVERY single heat. She gets fat, she looks pregnant, she gets milk, she nests, the whole nine yards. You would swear she is actually pregnant, except that we knew she was not bred. Now, she has just had her first litter, and some say, she will not have a false pregnancy again. We will see. If you are worried, have her seen by a vet. But, a false pregnancy, you just have to let it run its course. Some dogs are more prone than others and it seems to be a big unknown as to why.

Will be interesting to see if it works ...a guy I know with a pointer bitch she always had false pregs...he was told the same thing that whelping a litter would cure her.... she died of pyometria (sp?) 3 weeks after her litter....don't mean be doom and gloom or insinuate that that will happen... as pyometria is something any female can be subject to after a breeding, heat cycle, or whelping. I my self am very concerned as a false preg going full cycle it isn't normal and seeking a vets advice would be highly advisable. reason I am expressing my strong concern I had a well bred female that did that, myself I elected to spay her at 18 months after she had a second false pregancy which my vet examined after the spay and she had a bunch of cysts in her uterus ... I hope more people weigh in with their experiences with better out comes and results and causes

She is under the watchful eye of a Repro Vet. She has been checked for cysts, tumors, etc. and nothing. If they are not concerned, then I am not concerned.

I have a 3 year old female that we kept from a litter from my older female and male. She has had several false pregnancies. She had one before the age of 2. At 2 years of age we were getting ready to have her x rayed for OFA, but she was having a false pregnancy, so we didn't want to take the chance on her x rays, so we waited. She would have a false pregnancy when my older bitch came into heat. I had the older bitch spayed this last July and my 3 year old just had a false pregnancy and the funny thing is she had the False P at the same time my older bitch would have come into heat. My 3 year old had her first litter last February and I am now wondering if this last false pregnancy will affect her next heat cycle, which should be in mid January. I think in my case , the 3 year old was born into the "pack" and goes back to the wild when wild female members would nurse the babies, if something happened to the dominate female. My older female is the dominate female and has been since day one. When Lucy Lu has a false pregnancy she nests, her teats swell, turn pink and produces some milk. She gathers all her "babies". ( stuffed toys) She always looks so "sad". When it first happened I took her to the vet and he is the one that said it was a false pregnancy.

I have heard that bitches who regularly have false pregnancies are at more of a risk of developing pyometria. So that should be something to watch for.
My bitch so far only gets swollen teats and milk. She hasn't shown any nesting or motherly instincts yet. But I will definitely take into consideration the cysts and whatnot and ask the vet about it.
