Anyone here have Brittanys that are affected with this? I have one dog here that I have noticed in the last 4-6 months is doing it more and more. Does anyone know exactly what causes this? Anyway to prevent it, or help him when he is having an attack? Everyone has told me there is nothing you can do for it. Is it hereditary? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

Plug their nose.
Seriously. If its what I think you're saying it is, they are trying to get sinus-y junk out of their nose or throat, pluging their nose will help them swallow it. Try it next time! ;-)
And no, its nothing hereditary at all.

There can be many factors related to this event... 1. Low grade allergies...I have a house dog that gets this most often in the winter, kind of like I get sinus issues at the same time. this can be due to dryness in the throat for winter heating, or slight welling for an allergic response. 2. the dog has a slightly elongated soft pallet so the glottis get stuck on occassion and so the dog wind sucks trying to get it unstuck.
Giving a little syring of water moistens the throat and lets the glottis move freely again, and gets the dog to swallow reflexively. If the dog is inside in the winter with artificial dryness, think about humidifying the air, if this problem occurs year around think about a chronic allergy condition that a mild antihistamine that your vet might suggest to keep things from swelling. Your vet might examine the back of the throat for any foriegn bodies like grass seeds that got embedded near the tonsils and so has a mild reaction going on back there.
Bottom line if it seems too frequent to be "normal" or seasonal then it is worth your time getting it looked at.
