I have a Brittany Mix that I got from ABR a few years ago. He is just now becoming a confident boy. I realized today that he has taught himself to open crate doors(when I am not home). He seems very intelligent. I want to try obedience with him, but don't know how to go about it. Any advice? Remember I live out in the sticks. What should I do?

Start out with basic obedience. Sit, down, stay, come, heel, etc. Eventually you'll want to bring the dog out to a petstore or busy park where you can work on ignoring distractions, but for now just introducing and teaching the main commands is a good start.
You'll also want to register the dog somewhere if you want to compete. Does he look enough like a purebred Britt? AKCs ILP/PAL program may work. Also, UKC allows mixed breeds to compete in all events, besides conformation.
Post again if you have any more questions!

Definitely! We are here to help. Rescues can be worked with. I have one that now has a CDX and we are working on Utility (UD). We have gone through most of the pitfalls to training that there are. You need to establish that you are alpha or the pack leader. Walking on a loose leash is probably the most difficult thing to accomplish. If you can do that, then you are well on your way.

Ok Thanks, I'll Try that. any books or videos I should get to help train me to help train him. I am a show person, so obedience is new for us. Well he looks like what he is a Britt/Eng setter mix.

Any books on positive reinforcement is great. Just be sure you make it fun!
Do you have any experience teaching a dog sit or lay down at all???

No I have not. As a show person we are taught not to do those things, but I want to expand my knowledge starting with Rocket, and then work on the show dogs, when I get good enough. I would love to compete one day in obedience and not just Show/Field.

Hey! When I see you at San Antonio I'd be happy to give you pointers on training a few things. Come is also a big comman needed in obedience that can be taught to show and field dogs, along with stay. :-)
Also, search on youtube. It always helps me to see someone doing it with their dog. Just search "training Sit" or something like that. There'll be quite a few videos.

Contact a local obedience or training club. It is helpful to find a mentor to help you.
