What is the difference between an All Age prospect/dog, and a Gun Dog?

Range and independence. An all age dog you don't want to see a lot of. You want to ride up and find them standing. A gun dog is a closer working dog that you should be able to see most of the time, if even at a good distance.

all age dogs are run off dogs that have no value as hunters, and gun dogs can at least be trained to maybe hunt with you on foot. Those all age dogs run way too big for any practical use, yet many people want this kind of dog...it just baffles my mind

I must take slight offense to this as my breeding program and all of my personal dogs are all age dogs. At the same time all of my personal dogs have been hunted over and had wild birds killed over them, and many retrieved to hand. All good field trial dogs understand the difference between a horse back trial and a foot handling hunting situation. My Major dog was hunted over in south Texas by none other than former President Bush Sr. and Jim Baker. Major is by all accounts a true all age dog earning 2 American Field Championships and 2 RU American Field Championships as well as his AKC Dual Championship and AKC Amateur Field Championship from the All Age Stake before he was retired in 2008. He is now my personal pet and hunting companion for my family. 2 weeks ago at the Sunland BC trial my 6 month old all age prospect out of 2 of my All Age trial dogs had 7 finds in the 35 minutes that she ran on Saturday morning, more than any other dog in the trial. So someone please explain to me how all age dogs are inferior to gun dogs and hunting dogs. Laura Wilder Touch of Class Ranch

Those all age dogs run way too big for any practical use, yet many people want this kind of dog...it just baffles my mind This is usually a comment made by someone with little knowledge. A good All-Age dog is not a run-off by any means, they have very strong desire and a more independent mentality. This independence is not about self hunting, but the intelligence to seek game without constance chatter or guidence form a person. Independence to "think" of a soultion to his problem on finding game. This dog works well when its owner understands this and developes the dog to work in concert with a person who also has a similar passion for game in the toughest of situations. All-age dogs can work close or far out it is the mental qualites that make the difference. All-Age dogs have a tougher disposition and such a strong desire for game many will endure the most intollerant of conditions and they take a much more "intelligent" trainer/owner to communicate with them. They help keep a gene pool from stagnation and decline, and keep top notch gun dogs for the majority of the hunters out there. Every line of "Gun-Dogs" has an All-Age dog behind in its pedigree that has made what the best gun dogs are today. There is no difference be it in American dogs or in French dogs, the cream trial dogs and the extreme expressors will always continue to contribute and maintain gun dogs for their working purpose and the average hunter...

I agree with Goldie and TouchofClass...
While I'm fairly new to the scene... my dog at her last couple of trials was gone. Only time I'd see her is a flash across the field, or on point. She was always way out in front (and she was only a derby). When I hunt her, she really reels in and stays closer. Doesn't range near as far as she did in the trial (and the last couple of trials were walking trials). Just my opinion tho...
