Hi I am looking for some information on what lines of brittanys make the best hunters? I have seen field trial dog and they run like really far out and do not seem to be very good for hunters. I have also heard that show dogs have a lot of the hunting instinct bred out of them. So are dual dogs the best? I have heard that Noolans last bullet dogs make really good hunting dogs and I see a lot of them advertised for sale on gun dogs online. Do any of you have any experience with these dogs? I am trying to find a new female puppy and would like to get the best breeding lines possible, so you help or comments would really help me. I like smaller dogs as they seem to be easier to keep in the house so maybe I need to find out about smaller lines? What about french brittanys? Some say they are the best because they are the original brittanys is this true? I appreciate your comments

Dont let the "field trial" lines scare you away just because they run big and range far. My phylosophy is I can always make them shorter but you cant make them run. Again, it is how you bring them up from 8 weeks on and the type of training you do to instill the range you desire.
Nolans Last Bullett dogs are very good hunters and go back to a dog by the name of Ruff and Ready Zack (NLB actually goes back to some nice field trial lines).
One of the best crosses out there is the Microdot lines x Beans Blaze lines, this produces stylish Britts with good noses.
I too like the smaller Britts and currently have a female that I am in the process of breaking and she is all of 18 lbs soaking wet, very fast, tremendous style, alot of stamina.................just hard to see at 400 yds.

I have a couple sired by Nolans Last Bullet they are super birddogs and also do well with what they are trianed to do I have also run them in NSTRA one is a 4x the other is a 1x NSTRA champion I wild bird hunt when i get the chances other then that at home they are run on the preserve on pheasant and chuckar ..making many clients happy
Personally ....A good dog is going to do what it has the natural ability for and trained to do should one get in to trialing ..and there what ever is fun for you and your dog is the best.
Nolans Lines base off of Rick Smith lines which ...yes offer quite a bit of being natural bird finders
there are many lines which trained up well for gundog some being bigger runner and put infront of a horse
Base I will bet a good 90 percent of dogs go to Hunters as trialers in truth make up a small percentage of bird dog owners...
but the thing about field trials they do help show lines that have heart and desire and trainabilty..some venues show more of the run some more of the bird...but they all have a purpose and ..again one venue is not better then another ...
Ask the dogs they don't care they get to run and find birds and the owners look at them they are having fun and devoting their time and efforts into the Venues which they enjoy

If you saw the field trial dogs at a field trial ,then the range is what you expect..
I have an all age dog , her range in trials probably could be considered among the biggest, yet we have taken her grouse hunting and have no effort keeping her range acceptable.
Nolans Last Bullet goes back to the same dogs as a lot of the trial dogs.

Bigbirdhunter, The reason I run Brittanys is very simple. They simply adapt better than any breed. I have two all age dogs in my kennel. When I jump on my horse and hit the whistle they are gone to the front, When I turn them out in heavy cover on foot they hunt close. The most important thing in your case is to find a line of brittany that points extremly hard, the more point the better. This type of dog is thinking more about finding birds than it is running. If you buy a puppy bred right and hunt it right off the get go, you will never have to worry about range. Do your homework!!!! buy a dog from proven AKC FC/AFC Lines. Dont believe the hype. Go and see the dogs work for you self. If the breeder isnt willing or makes excuses, dont buy. There is some really good stuff out there all over the the country regardless where you live. Good luck This is one of our all age dogs Chip
