How do you all go about finding and choosing a stud dog for your bitch?
What do you do if a stud you're interested in is deceased, but frozen semen is available? You haven't ever seen the dog so how do you determine if you want to breed to him or not?
Also, how do you finally choose the perfect stud for your bitch out of a few you like?

when your dealing with frozen semen...you are most likely going to have some idea of the progeny of the dog as to what they have produced
I also look for common lines that are crossing and line breeding well
once you put the virtual puppy together ..it is up to mother nature after that i have seen where frozen semen of potential great studs didn't produce near as great as hoped was the the freezing process was it the bitch or both...that is the 64,000 dollar question

Who are you looking at? Whats the breeding behind your bitch??
This for me is a tough questions. There is so many factors that go into determining who I'll choose. It depends on the bitch I wanna breed. Then I pick out the weaknesses in my dog and look towards dogs that will replace that void in my bitch. I think about it alot and never really come up with a solid "thats right" pick but I always have several nice studs thta I know of and have seen. And like K9 said after that it's all mother nature...
Good Luck

Reply in Caps since this board doesn't have a simple quote format:
How do you all go about finding and choosing a stud dog for your bitch? KNOW YOUR bitch AND WHAT HER LINES ARE KNOWN TO CONSISTENTLY PRODUCE GOOD OR BAD. ONCE YOU HAVE THAT INFORMATION THEN YOU SEEK A STUD THAT CONSISTENTLY PRODUCES WHAT YOUR LINE LACKS AND STILL "MAINTAINS" THE REST OF THE QUALITIES. DIFFICULT IF THE PEOPLE YOU QUEERY DO NOT GIVE YOU FULL DISCLOSURE EITHER BECAUSE THEY DO NOT KNOW OR WANT TO HIDE.
What do you do if a stud you're interested in is deceased, but frozen semen is available? BE SURE THAT YOUR FEMALE HAS NO REPRODUCTIVE ISSUES AND IS PROVEN. FROZEN SEMEN IS A SPENDY ROUTE TO GO WITH IMPLANTATION, TESTING, VETERINARY FEES, ETC. IF THE STUD WAS AN EXCELLENT REPRODUCER YOU HAVE HIS PAST BREEDINGS TO COMPAIR TO AND HOPEFULLY SOMEONE WITH YOUR bitchES LINES AND TYPE HAS ALREADY USED HIM AND YOU MAY HAVE A BETTER IDEA OF WHAT "COULD" MATERIALIZE...BUT AS WITH ANY BREEDING IT IS AN EDUCATED GUESS.
You haven't ever seen the dog so how do you determine if you want to breed to him or not?
Also, how do you finally choose the perfect stud for your bitch out of a few you like? WELL HOPEFULLY THE FEW YOU DO LIKE ARE BASICALLY EQUAL IN HEALTH TESTING, EQUAL IN CONFORMATION, AND EQUAL IN WORKING DEMEANOR. FROM THERE IT IS THE BEST GUESS AS TO WHICH ONE CAN CROSS FAULT YOUR bitch AND WHOSE PEDIGREE IS COMPATIBLE FOR THE LINES YOU HAVE. SIMILARITIES USUALLY GET YOU BETTER RESULTS THAN A TOTAL VARIETY FOR THE SAKE OF FRESH BLOOD...BUT SOME MAY BE DOING A BREEDING FOR JUST THAT.... NEXT IS LOGISTICS...IS IT FEASABLE TO GET TO THE STUD AT THE TIME NEEDED FOR YOUR FEMALE, IS THERE WEATHER OR TRAVEL CONSTRICTIONS THAT MY UPSET THE PROCESS? IS THE MALE GOING TO BE EASILY ACCESSABLE AT THE RIGHT TIME. LOTS OF TRAVELING COMPETITORS CAN PUT THE STUD YOU WANT OUT OF POCKET JUST WHEN YOU NEED HIM AND THAT COULD BE A PROBLEM.
Everything is hard choices and breeding is a littel be art and science and LUCK !

that is one i can't seem to get through a few of my friends heads on the don't do AI's on unproven bitches
1st it is money for the semen shipping and the extra costs specially with a deceased sire there is no replacing that semen
how will she be as a mother nothing like all the added costs and she won't take care of them
or she is a low producer
and it isn't uncommon for a first time breeding to not take specially if you want it to
