How can you get a tri from a litter? I know both parents have to be a tri carrier, but how direct? Does a sibling or grand parent need to be tri? Or can it be a few generations back?

I posted this on the Brittany List:
First off it takes a combination of two specific recessive genes to produce tricolors, and one dominant 'E'xtention gene to produce either Liver or Black so you get the three colors.
1st- the 'at' gene from the agouti series needs to be in double copy. so the dog MUST get an 'at' gene from the father and mother so that it will be in double copy in the pup. From the Brittanys that have been tested the majority have the 'at' gene, but lack the other factor to express tricolor.
2nd- the dog must also have two copies of recessive blac'K' concentration genes of the 'ky' version in order for any tri pattern from the agouti series to be expressed. This gene allows for full expression of Eumelanin (Black/Liver)when in the dominant form 'K' you do not see the tri pattern even if the dog is carrying 2 copies of 'at'. So a dog that is 'K/ky' and liver may show a phantom shadow of tri points but not be fully expressed. Only when it carries the combination 'ky/ky' does it allow for the points to be seen in full expression or rather in the restriction of black/liver in the point regions so that we see Orange. Many pointing breeds are of the dominant blac'K' expression and so we usually see only the regular pied patterns. So the dog can be 'K/K' or possibly 'K/ky' these dogs are not showing tri patern in the Liver or Black versions. Of course you cannot see the tri pattern in an orange doge because of the third factor.
3rd- The dog must carry at least one dominant 'E'xtention gene to see Liver or Black. Orange dogs are a recessive combination of 'e/e' which prevents the expression of liver or black and only allows us to see yellow. When you always breed orange to orange you are hiding the expression of the tri factor as all you will ever produce is orange. When you breed Orange to Liver or Black you make one change so that you get differnt color factors possible. If an Orange dog throws a Tri pup in almost every litter when bred to a Liver that maybe showing phantom marks then it is a good bet that the Orange dog is homozygous for Tricolor in both the 'at' and the 'ky' genes.
So when you get the 3 gene combinations right you will see a tricolored dog. Of course the pattern is hidden in many generations when only orange dogs are bred together.
The photo of your dog "implies" that she is: at/at, K/ky, E/-, b/b in her color genetics. where - is unknown...but knowing the parents would say the unknown is "e" from Rebel Dog.

I see on the brittany champions website that there is only 1 FC (at least posted). Having said that, I think Kiki's Mom has a tri that just became a FC (pending AKC approval). If that is true, he would be the second tri FC. This is assuming that the website is accurate (which I'm sure it is) and up to date (I don't know for sure).

If you are referring to 2X American Field Champion FC/AFC Shiloh's Blazin Tri'd N Tru, he has crossed the rainbow bridge

As long as the placement of the orange is correct, there is no reason it couldn't be shown. In fact, the only diqualifications, for Brittanys, is height and the color black on the dog.

What is the reason that tris are less preferrable?

What is the reason that tris are less preferrable? What I remember from that time in the 80's was that they did not want Tricolors to be "prefered" was that as with colors sometimes it takes hold over quality. So they did not want it to be implied as better than another color. Language and interpreting the written word can mean so many things to different readers....Some so called breeders would possibly specialize in a color pattern and the club did not want that to happen is my best guess. In the FCI they have color varieties....Orange/Whites and Any Other Allowed Color. SO that Livers and Blacks and Tris compete with each other and only Orange dogs with Orange. It is much harder in France to become a show champion, and so by having the color variety it allows for a maximum of show 8 champions (4 male & 4 female) in a given year if all other criteria is right.

I am looking for a tri Brittany. We just lost our Izzie (our third Brittany) in February and we need another to complete our family. We are retired but have a large fenced yard and take plenty of walks. We live in Solvang Ca. very near Santa Barbara. Anybody have a puppy or young dog they want to sell. naglerje@aol.com
