Whats the difference between an French Brittany and an AKC Brittany? the registration papers of the country of origin and the use of a slightly different breed standard and the use of a breed warden system that determins if a dog is allowed to have breeding rights or not at 1 year of age. They are not a seperate breed except in the USA where the FBGDA has petitioned for seperate breed status under the UKC. In all other registries around the world they are registered at this time as one and the same. But most Breeders that follow the European standard and for many in France they do not like the "elegance" seen in American dogs and the look of a welsh springer in the face or in the way the dogs are groomed. Many fault the "American dog" for having pigmentation problems such as white in the ear which is a disqualification from breeding in France, or butterfly noses which are also eliminating. Most also prefer Roan dogs to clear pieds for the pigmentation issues. Actually many have seen recent ABC magazines and have commented that several of the dogs would be evaluated and rated as of "Excellent" type but for the reasons abouve would not "choose" to breed to these dogs. They are legal to breed together but most focusing on one type of look over another would be defeating their purpose if they did. But many all over the world are and have been interbred. Namely, Australia, Argentina, Japan, Sweden, Norway, Germany, England, USA, Canada, Venezuela, Italy.

So just curious, could you breed an AKC Britt to a French Britt, and still register the puppies with AKC?

So just curious, could you breed an AKC Britt to a French Britt, and still register the puppies with AKC? Of course.... French imported bitch was bred to Ch. Jamie's Lightening and DC Kipp's Trooper Rochambeau back in the 1970's. FCH "tank" has this in his background as do many dogs currently registered as "French Foundation Stock" in the UKC. A Litter sister to Shadow had a litter of pups sired by "french" dog and had the litter registered by AKC. All Foriegn Dogs and those born in the USA if accepted for AKC registration by pedigree and country are registered as Brittanys. If a French Brittany owner fails to continue to register their dog with AKC then of course it is no longer able to reproduce AKC pups just as a limited AKC registration prevents an AKC born dog from having its pups registered later.
