An OFA fair is with in Breeding standards Thing that gets me is people are afraid of the word Fair...that was a poor choice of words on OFA's behalf if you have a question about breeding call Dr Keller ...I did I have a female that is OFA fair...she has a decnt history of goods in her back ground some excellents ... If one learns what xrays look like you well see extremely little difference from a fair to a good I have bought pups from OFA excellent to OFA Good breeding only to get a severly dysplastic pup So after jumping on the OFA band wagon I have learned it is no garautee that pups will be free of HD Excellent Good fair I will not breed to a dog that can't pass OFA ..If the dog fails OFA PENN hip is not an option for an excuse to breed cause the dog fals in some percentile...I have resevations about PENN HIP due directly to the lack of information so a person can learn what is and isn't accpetable from a source other then the breeder who has it done Neither program is a fail safe either again they are not gentic tests so neither one can garauntee pups will be free of HD So a fair with a good background can be a better canidate to breed to the an excellent with a not so good back ground So a fair doesn't scare me...when I got to speak with Dr Keller it was very informative www.offa.org there is plenty there to read and learn and helps to put some stuff in to prespective but just saying breeding good and excellents will stop HD just isn't true we just don't and never will have that control over genetics and mother nature..

www.offa.org/hipinfo.html this link is to quite a few other links which also gives you more info I give up on PENN hip their site is pathetic and does nothing to educate a person as to what is accptable with in the breeds percentile as what is accptable or with in a relam of numbers for one is not the same for another and with more being done ratings can change I suggest one talks to a vet that Does penn Hip to gain further info..I gave up was to complex and bottom line ...it can no more garauntee HD free pups then OFA can and at least OFA records can be on dog researched that is being considered more so then PENN Hip offers as again just bcause a dog has the best rating PENN hIP OR OFA and still pass on a dysplastic pup.

OFA Fair is still passing. What I would suggest, really is to look at the pedigree & siblings etc to see how many of them have passed. If an OFA Fair dog has many siblings & a pedigree full of dogs that have passed OFA (& not just all Fair either) then you are better off than an OFA Fair (or even a Good or Excellent) dog that has a pedigree with few dogs that have been OFA certified or have not passed. I've never done PENN Hip but have been doing some research on it & ran across an interesting article on a Vizsla breeder's website. She is also a vet. She answered several questions I had about PENN hip. dogwebs.net/paradox/PennHIP.asp

Interesting link Thank you
I will still stick with OFA...
hopefully some day maybe they can find a genetic marker for it then maybe we can really get a head of it but I think mother Nature will still remind us we are only human

I would breed to it and have no reservations what so ever. I have never used Penn Hip and not much of a favorite to OFA since neither are guarantee's that the pups will be HD free. I have discussed this exact topic with KSU ............. most people think that HD is caused/created only by genetics.........NOT TRUE. Genetics do ...but are only 1 reason of many that can cause the hips not to fully develop. Diet, jumping up and down on a dog house, roading are other causes which create too much stress/strain on the hips and not allow them to fully develop.......genetically the dog is fine but because of an injury, strain/stress, diet ect. the dog wont pass.
How many of the BIG running Pointers are OFA certified?
