Hi I am hoping that one of you could help me with some good information. How many pups do brittanys usually have? I am interested in breeding my personal hunting dog to a good female to get a couple of pups for myself and my family. I also have some friends that like my dog and also want some pups. Is there anything that I can do to make sure that the female will have a full size litter? Is there a diet or breeding technique that might help with the litter? I appreciate any help that you could give me

There is no way to make sure a female will have 1 puppy much less 6 8 or 10 or what ever...that is in mother natures and Gods hands As for finding someone ...I get offers from people who have males wanting a pup and think they are doing me a favor by saying they want one or two and then I can deal with the rest of the pup... just putting this in to perspective ..that means now i am stuck with the pups and placing them...what about those pup that don't sell and are still running around the house and yard at 8 plus 12 plus weeks old Also what about the health and stuff on your male and the female ..OFA and the docks and dews of the pups I am just trying to put inthe after the easy part of tossing two dogs together to do what comes natural and producing that litter cause if you go to www.gundogbreeders.com you will see there are over 200 listed brittany breeders there alone that doesn't include what is in the lcoal newspaper or other internet puppy find type sales places. there are lots of puppies out there some sell faster then other cause of what efforts a breeder puts into the litters There are many well bred hunting dogs so ...i am not going to say trial dogs are the only dog that should be bred but again there should be more thought then just to produce a litter of pups things like that both dam and sire have the desired traits..pedigrees are nice icing to the cake. do both dam and sire pass hips....not a garauntee that pups will be free of HD but at least you are showing that the dam and sire were free of it which shows you are breeding sound stock Again somethings are not in our control but at least we can do the best we can specially in todays age where there are so many litters and breeders out there ... Also look at it from a buyers view why should they buy a pup from this litter when there are many litters to choose from Remember this is just stuff to think about...what you decide to do is your business and up to you

thanks for some very good points. I am pretty sure that my brittany, Jack will make an excellent sire of quality pups. He has a great nose, was easy to train, finds a ton of birds and usually out performs any dogs that we hunt with. I have looked at some big named brittanys before but they are usually big running freaks that could never be useful for hunting, why would i want that. What many in these competitions forget is that they are all designed to be fake hunting. Well my jack is a real hunter, and i am sure if he was ever run in field trials he would have been a champion. So breeding him will insure that his great traits are passed on to the next generation of hunters

he is from cribb lines and round oak breeding...both are very old lines that really go back to real bird dogs, now show stuff mixed in, all bird dogs. I think that show dogs have been mixed in to much in some lines and bird desire is lessened to some extent. I know wild bird hunting is the true test of bird dogs

How are the hips? Have his hips been OFA'd? You should probably check to see that the female has had her hips x-rayed, also.
